Wasit Nature Reserve is located in the Ramtha area, near the suburb of Wasit in Sharjah, on a coastal strip that is a major pathway for migratory birds, spanning a large area of 0.86 square kilometers, and includes a wonderful and distinct mixture of gardens and Green spaces, salt flats, plains, dunes, beaches and lakes, which turn them into a green lung that is beloved for the emirate's inhabitants, a unique destination for picnics and recreation trips for individuals and families, a real and ideal wildlife sanctuary in the region and also a favorite place for resident and migratory birds and different types of animals.
The site was declared a nature reserve under the 2007 Emir's Decree No. 7 issued by His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and ruler of Sharjah. According to the official site of wasit nature reserve, the reserve contains approximately 200 different species of birds depending on the migratory seasons, of which 60 species of birds are inside the educational center.
In addition to a large number of small mammals, reptiles and insects, rare insect species were first discovered in the UAE. This reserve plays an important role in preserving the environment in the region, where vegetation filters and purify the air from harmful gases and dust, increases oxygen content in the atmosphere and reduces global warming, especially as it is located near the center of Sharjah.
